I was like "what is hapeening to me!?". I grew up on horror movies! We had a video store down the street from my grandmas house with whom I stayed with every weekend when I was little and since we knew the owners they let me take 5 movies at a time, anything I wanted. So from age 5 and up I splurged on horror movies every weekend and was always the kid at slumber parties talking the other kids into playing scary games and telling stories. But as soon as I had my daughter and reality/maturity set in things started to change. Don't get me wrong, I still have my rare vhs horror movie collection but my taste in horror movies has definitely been curbed and I can barely read my Stephen King books anymore (especially Pet Semetary!). Don't worry, you will still be able to enjoy some horror movies but now you have more important things to focus on, it's a good sign really :).Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1930142685890514338.post-80094457759841197582016-05-29T12:52:05.457-04:002016-05-29T12:52:05.457-04:00Hi, I am pondering unplugging the fridge, and thou...Hi, I am pondering unplugging the fridge, and thought i would get some google imput.
I like your post. My mother had been right all these years telling me there is something else at work in these movies and I used to pride myself in not jumping during movies like a pussy and predicting nearly every scene. Funny how life really makes you snap out of it. Alot of my friends still love horror films and I notice their personalities seem a bit odd to me now. Its just an invitation of evil into your life especialy wen you make an event out of it (horror movie night). People tend to think species survive over the long haul because they are finely adapted to their environments -- when actually the opposite is true. Species survive over the long haul because they are dragging along a whole inconvenient multitude of maladapted misfits, outliers, sorry mutants, and mothers' disappointments. But when time change (and change they always do) the finely adapted individuals are suddenly the doomed, and it is some outlier -- some flower that always bloomed too early or too late or some gazelle that was too big and slow -- that is "fit" in the new scheme. It's diversity and often enough the crazy, maladaptive periphery that is the key to survival in changing times, and that's why I think we should all do our best to wander off in some direction that seems plausible. If things go bad, we'll still all be mostly doomed, but someone maybe won't be. Because they got off the narrow path that had seemed so safe and adaptive and inevitable just a moment before.Andy Brownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03820201752437230985noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1930142685890514338.post-69098572896033400072012-04-28T16:54:45.373-04:002012-04-28T16:54:45.373-04:00The picture depicting the goths is brokenThe picture depicting the goths is brokenAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1930142685890514338.post-74311587892017486452011-12-15T12:52:12.478-05:002011-12-15T12:52:12.478-05:00Aw heck yeah I've seen the Stewart piece--I la...Aw heck yeah I've seen the Stewart piece--I laughed till I fell on the ground. I'm a strong supporter of the OWS movement, even though, I've had the same criticism - that being, that not having a clear focus might be detrimental to the movement. At the same time, I've always understood that it's about a lot more than can succinctly articulated in 25 words or less, because it's what I've been writing about, like you, for the past half dozen years or so. It's just not as simple as "this is our list of demands", and requires a real overhaul of what is a very broken system.

I really hope that people do start to listen, because none of the alternatives are very palatable.Wendyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04642417312794814066noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1930142685890514338.post-70651383311275307462011-11-11T22:02:32.236-05:002011-11-11T22:02:32.236-05:00Thank you. I admit that I've mostly been hearing nebulous things about the Occupy movement (mostly Boston not Wall Street... guess where I live! :-P) but not actually been tracking down info.

And those that were "handing out info" at UMass were less than reliable sources (oh my gods they are terrible spokespersons you don't even want to know how much incendiary language they were using relegating them to unreliable narrator status...) and I found it hard to find actual data.

On the other hand, I got to be the first (today!) to talk to my mother about it. I didn't know it was possible to be less informed than I.

But again, thanks for the more info. I've run the basic content of the video (though not this video in particular) by a number of economists, who either said "Yeah, that's pretty much right" or "Huh? That's how our monetary system works?" Some would probably look askance at the slavery claims, but I'd love to hear the counter arguments. =)

@Dea-chan: Yeah, I wasn't real comfortable with the Ron Paul clips, either. I thought about saying something, but decided to just let it ride and let others make their own decisions. I will say that I've been aware of the info in this video for way longer than I've been aware of Ron Paul, so it's not terribly swaying to me. I've seen it replicated by avowed Libertarians and Socialists, so I just don't see a political motivation overall. That said, I think the fact that Paul did call this out on the floor of Congress is the only thing that has ever endeared me to him. So there is that.

You're concern about Occupy being unfocused is, I think, both important and incorrect, but the whys are complicated. I'd actually like to do a whole separate post on this, because I think it's important, and there aren't many venues out there to have this discussion (certainly it doesn't condense into the required 10 second soundbite, so the news options don't care). So if I can beg your patience, I'll get to it soon!Robyn M.https://www.blogger.com/profile/08885081377174592304noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1930142685890514338.post-91388536656485847312011-11-08T15:46:40.623-05:002011-11-08T15:46:40.623-05:00I see what you mean by scare tactics in the vid. ...I see what you mean by scare tactics in the vid. If they were a little more unified and had actual goals I think it'd be easier to understand. But I think the majority of the people out there are more lost than not.

I want this movement to make a difference. I want it to change things. I want us to be like Iceland.
